Since Eva L. Smith and Diane Bruce organized the first running of the Fodderstack 10-k in 1979, the race has become a rite of spring in Rappahannock county. Its reputation has also spread as one of the toughest 10-k courses many experienced runners have ever encountered.The race has grown from 137 runners in 1979 to several hundred in recent years and the organizational responsibilities have grown as well, Mrs. Brown said. As the runners braved the bitter chill of winter slogging out their training miles, the race committee was busy calling running publications to ensure the Fodderstack was included in their race calendars
