Paul J. Norris, Jr., of Viewtown, has been named Arlington’s 2006 Teacher of the Year.
Norris is the Band Director of Arlington’s Swanson Middle School, and is credited with increasing the number of students involved in the Swanson band program from 60 in 1994 when be began his tenure, to 184 in 2005. Norris also directs a HILT (High Intensity Language Training) beginning band, a jazz ensemble, and the pep/marching band, and is the director of the music department at Swanson.
Norris’ wife Debrajean is glad that the busy band leader’s long commute from Viewtown to Arlington has been officially justified.
“All those hours of being at work and being on 1-66 to and from Arlington have really paid off! This is a great honor for Paul,” said Debrajean.
Norris is one of 20 metropolitan D.C. area “Teachers of the Year” that will be honored on May 1 at The Washington Post, as part of the annual Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Awards sponsored by The Post Company’s Educational Foundation. The awards were established in Meyer’s name to recognize dedicated teachers who have shown initiative, creativity and an exceptional degree of professionalism in teaching. The winners are nominated by members of their community and selected by their individual school systems. Each Teacher of the Year winner receives a crystal apple and a $3,000 award.
