Be safe Two counties. Three trucks. Three deaths. Too much.
Rappahannock resident Franklin Hitt is still unconscious after a serious accident left him crumpled in the front seat of his pickup this past Saturday. In neighboring Fauquier County, three were killed on Monday afternoon as two trucks collided on US 17 in Bealeton. A 12-year-old is not out of harm’s way. These were not the only accidents that occurred within the past few days but they were among the most tragic.
The sight of smashed vehicles and destroyed lives is not new. In fact, they happen at an alarming rate. For Franklin Hitt, his recovery will be long and slow as he has lost part of one leg. His health wasn’t all that great to begin with but he always had plenty of healthy humor that he spread graciously to all he encountered. There are simply more cars and people on the roads these days even in bucolic Rappahannock. Ironically, Hitt had just helped victims of another accident that occurred near his home. An animal lover, Hitt took responsibility for their dog until they were able to return for him. Springtime brings us all out to enjoy warmer weather. It also finds our minds wandering and perhaps our reflexes not quite as sharp as we take in the awakening countryside as we drive. It sounds trite and certainly overused but when we get in our vehicles, buckle up and hit the road - be mindful and drive defensively.

This Sunday is Easter and throughout the county local churches will celebrate with pre-dawn services. For those of you who aren’t religious, Easter will slip by as another Sunday where special finery and colorful baskets add a splash of ceremony to the beginning of spring. For those of you who are, it’s a special time of year where hope and a spirit of renewal are celebrated and praised. Miracles of nature abound as well as miracles of the soul. It is a time to smile and herald a new season.
