PALLBEARERS
It is the duty of the pallbearers, to carry or otherwise transport the casket during a funeral service. This honor is usually reserved for people who enjoyed an especially close relationship with the deceased. The pallbearers’ proximity to the body and special responsibility for moving it along to its final resting place have both tangible and symbolic meaning. In fact, the term pallbearer is derived from the Latin word “pallium,” which means “cloak,” or covering. In military funerals, the pall is likely to be a flag. In more historic terms, the pall refers to the burial cloths in which the bodies were wrapped in ancient times. Pallbearers are thus responsible for the last vestiges of the deceased.
