disillusionment

“Syriana,” a global portrait of danger, disillusionment and deception, is a fascinating narrative of political intrigue that spans three continents but spends most of its time in the Middle East., The multiple storylines that weave together depict the fierce pursuit of wealth and power and the very human conseauences.
The Rappahannock Association for tie Arts and Community brings “Syriana” to The Theatre on Gay Street, Washington, VA., Friday, April 21, at 8 p.m.
Written and directed by Stephen Gaghan (who also wrote “Traffic”) the multilayered film requires close attention to keep up with the several interwoven plots, all dealing with oil. George Clooney stars as a CIA agent whose assignments in Lebanon and Iran are not what they seem. Clooney as agent Bob Barnes and long time Middle East operative is hooked on top-secret overseas assignments but becomes a liability. Now enter two major American oil companies, Connex and Killen. Killen has acquired drilling rights in Kazakhstan although it is the smaller of the two firms. CEO of Killen is played by Chris Cooper and Bennett Hobday is Jeffrey Wright, the lawyer brought in to investigate the proposed merger. And here’s another big plot: Alexander Siddig plays Prince Nasir Al-Subaai, next in line to become Emir of a country rich in oil. The prince believes that what is best for his people is to get value for his country’s oil and not be a puppet of the United States, making him very unpopular among those with real power.
