This is Clooney’s best acting so far; he’s quietly devastating and haunting and the Academy Awards recognized him as Best Actor in a Supporting Role at this year’s Oscars. Matt Damon gives a jolting performance as Biyan Woodman, a financial analyst living with his family in expatriate luxury in Geneva and becomes the financial adviser to Prince Nasir (Siddig). Meanwhile, a young Pakistai laborer (Mazhar Munir) in Prince Nawir’s country succumbs to the lure of radical Islam and seeks refuge from the oil fields and crowded hostels in the tranquility of a madrasa, a theological school. Gaghan’s interlocking stories demand attention as the curves keep coming.
“Syriana” is an adult motion picture, made with mature viewers in mind. Audiences are challenged to make their own determinations. It is one of the best films of 2005. “Syriana” is rated R for violence and profanity; run time is 126 minutes.
