to work: Mix the com, sugar, yeast, and some fresh spring water. Let the mixture ferment for a few days. Now boil the brew in your copper kettle until it vaporizes. (Be sure to perform this step at night as the smoke and steam will likely attract neighbors, competitors, or Gmen during daylight.) Catch the vapor in your coil or radiator and place in another container. Allow the collected liquid to cool. Now, bottle for distribution, but hold back a little, sit back and take a refreshing gulp of your product. That’s all there is to it. But watch out for the Tuck’; this stuff is way, way, way over 100 proof.
You may wish to tend to a few other minor details. Watch how much sugar or ground com you purchase at one time. A truckload of 80 lb. sugar and com sacks may draw attention. Commercial hog chow or other animal feeds high in com content may be a more discreet choice. A loaded shotgun could be handy in certain instances. When a few well-placed rounds are not sufficient to rebuff the curious, you may want to have your 400-horse stock car nearby, timed up, and ready to roll. Don’t forget, NASCAR came about, in part, to display the driving skills of the old-time bootleggers. These folks were no dummies. Provision for a quick getaway is essential.
