Some of you may have already met her. She’s been to the county several times usually with a notebook in hand and a smile on her face. Kathy Lynch is gathering information for her next project: a book about Rappahannock County.

“I’ve been a visitor for the past 20 years,” said Lynch, “originally it was Faith Mountain that brought me here and the herbs.”

“It’s so beautiful here, I’d come two or three times a year, in the fall...and then there was this woman named Flossie that lived in Woodville and was very involved with herbs.”

It was those memories and more that lured Lynch to Rappahannock and away from the rat race that has come to typify Northern Virginia.

“This has always been a nice place to escape to,” added Lynch who has lived on and off in Virginia for 30 years and currently resides in Prince William County.

The idea for a book on Rappahannock evolved from a previous book that Lynch has done on a small town named Zanesville in Ohio. There she collaborated with a professor and between the two of them published the slim book that speaks volumes about that town, its history and its people.

“I was visiting Rappahannock County in May and observing the changes. It’s so beautiful but unaffordable for me,” said Lynch who thought at the time that this was the perfect place to do her next book.

Pitching her idea td Arcadia Publishing who did the previous book and has over 3,000 titles, Lynch was pleased when the decision to do a book about Rappahannock County was approved. Once again, Lynch decided that seeking a co-collaborator was the way to go and who better than Judy Tole at the Rappahannock Historical Society in Washington.

“It’s the best way to do it,” acknowledged Lynch who said that she and Tole will be 50/50 partners on this
