about 40 feet. In the center a green pole called a “Fagan”, 18 feet long and three or four inches in diameter was erected. A three-cornered chimney was constructed around the Fagan using lap wood. When the chimney was about five feet high, a layer of the larger billets was placed against it. Additional billet layers were added, gradually increasing the diameter of the base of the mound.After the outer layers of wood reached the height of the initial chimney, the latter was raised another five feet. Billets once again were laid on the expanding base, taking care that the exterior of the ascending cone had a gradual slope.At each fivefoot level, lap wood was used to fill in open spaces in billet logs to make the structure as airtight as possible.
