Even more amazing, not all individuals in the northern populations are migratory. The evidence suggests there are two genetic groups, those that stay put and those that migrate. Stay-at-homers take almost a year to develop, overwinter as nymphs, and then emerge as adults next spring to breed. They always stay home. Migrants develop into adults in less than three months, emerge in late fall and then travel to Florida to breed. Their offspring are also migratory and make the return trip north to breed.
All of these behaviors are innate, so individuals don’t decide to do these things. It’s a sort of genetic Calvinism that makes some stay put and others travel. But we doubt there’s much insect angst over this. After all, each behavior has its upside (and we’re sure you’ve already identified with one or the other). And most important, they both seem to work pretty well.
