In the midst of the sweltering heat over the weekend, Rappahannock 4-H youth tended, showed, and sold their animals at the Culpeper/Madison/Rappahannock (CMR) Farm Fair. | Friday morning, as the 4-H swine owners rested on their laurels, Caroline Massie quietly pitched hay to her 4-H steer as it munched on feed and slurped water from its trough.
Caroline raised three steers this year, however, she only brought one of them to the fair. “The others were just too ornery,” said her mother Debbie Massie.
After her steer was fed, Caroline led it around the corral to practice its halter routine and give it some exercise..
While Caroline worked, her brother • David, arrived with several additional hay bales from the Massie’s farm.
David, 22, a graduate of Roanoke College, majored in Environmental Policy. Prior to his college years, he was active in 4-H, raising several award winning steers that helped him financially through college.
David has been working on the farm for the summer, as he prepares for employment in his field of study.
“We stay busy all summer long,” he said.
