The hospitalist program in Culpeper is operated by a division of Culpeper Medical Associates, a medical group of doctors in Culpeper and surrounding counties and Culpeper Regional Hospital.
The movement toward hospitals having doctors on staff has gained speed in the last 12 years. In the mid 1990s about 800 doctors were on hospital staffs. By 2005, the number of hospitalists skyrocketed to 15,000. And by 2010, the Society of Hospital Medicine estimates 30,000 doctors will carry the title hospitalist.
Along the Route 29 corridor from Prince Wiliam County to Charlottesville, Culpeper Regional Hospital stands as the only hospital with hospitalists for adults. Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton plans to implement the program in 2007. Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg has a pediatric hospitalist program and Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville has an adult hospitalist program like Culpeper. The University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville relies on interns and resident doctors undergoing training to provide in-hospital care.
“The hospital has dedicated itself to the program,” said Dr. Mulugeta.
