In 2000, Culpeper Regional Hospital took 9 proactive approach to providing in-hospital patient care. The hospital’s program started with weekend when doctors patrolled the wards. From that beginning, the program expanded to cover nights, followed in 2002 with 24hour coverage.
“It is truly becoming more of a practical way of providing on site physician care to patients,” said CRH Vice President for Operations Pat Mullins.
The hospitalist program provides many benefits to doctors, patients and hospital stalf.
“When you have a physician right there, it is such a positive thing,” said Ms. Mullins.
Registered .nurse Delsie Heflen, a 31-year veteran, remembers what it was like trying to contact a doctor in the middle of the night. If a patient required a doctor’s immediate attention, the nurses on duty tried to contact the emergency room doctor or an anesthesiologist, if one happened to be in the buildine.
