Lee’s father, the late Fred Brooks, introduced her early to the equestrian lifestyle, placing her in the Middleburg-Orange County and Casanova Warrenton Pony Clubs and encouraging her participation in hunting, showing and eventing in the region. Now 40, Lee continued riding during her years at St. Lawrence in New York, on the intercollegiate equestrian team while earning a bachelor’s degree in political science. She next headed east to Yale as riding team coach.
There, Lee met future husband Sam, who was then working in the financial markets of nearby New York City. When they married in 1991, Lee kept up her riding, training in show jumping with legendary U.S. team coach George Morris and polishing her
