This merriment went on around the clock for about two weeks until ‘the pit’ (the mound, the igloo, the volcano) finally charred on down to (hopefully) a pile of coals. But even at this point fire could spoil the party. The collier and assistants would start raking away at the mound to remove ‘finished’ coals.
