Most of the other Rappahannock 4H youth showed pigs as well.
Strategically placed fans stirred the air around several Rappahannock award winning hogs as they slurped water from their drinking spouts and flopped out in their pen in the heat of the day.
“We all had a lot of fun and definitely want to do it next year,” said 12year-old Courtney Yowell.
This was her first year in 4-H, joining her older brother Taylor, 14 and her younger sister Allie, 10.
The Yowells became interested in the 4-H program and the farm fair after their father Daniel saw the project in a newspaper.
“We were pretty excited,” Courtney recalled. The Yowell’s, who live in Chester Gap, raised their pigs at their grandmothers farm in Etlan, VA.
Allie Yowell won fifth in showmanship, and sixth for the market hog category. Taylor won fourth in showmanship and fourth for market hog. Courtney won second in showmanship and fifth for market hog.
“They were stubborn sometimes but other than that it was fine,” Courtney said about her first livestock experience.
