Chance. Broken Trail is a collection of real stories; the horse drive came from a conversation with a Nebraska rancher; the ranches and places along the journey are all real, though some are now ghost towns; and the Chinese girls, also real people, come from Geoffrion's interest in Donaldina Cameron, who worked for 40 years to rescue young Chinese girls from the slave trade. The descendents of two characters, Torn Harte and Son Foy, still ranch in Wyoming.
