After quizzing Caroline on the details of her steer, he returned home, apparently satisfied that she would carry on the Massie family tradition.
The Massie’s Meadow Grove Farm has been the home of six generations of their family. They have an extensive history of supporting farming in the Rappahannock area.
Jim Massie has been deeply involved with the program since 1995. He helps auction off the animals each year. His wife Debbie judges the produce and the scrapbook entries.
David’s 4-H profits were a great help in paying for his education. Many of tiie youth save a greater portion of their profits for college after purchasing animals for the following year.
“The kids like to get money in their pocket as they start thinking about college,” smiled Debbie Massie who then added, “they are always excited to get a checking account.”
She added that the program has taught her kids how to budget their money and appreciate the hard work it takes to get it.
In addition to her steer, Caroline raised three pigs for the fair. She named them Lei, Hula, and Tiki Tiki.
