From colonial times until the end of the Nineteenth Century, iron making was an important industry in Virginia, mostly in the Shenandoah Valley and points south. Important resources present in the Valley included ready supplies of iron-ore and limestone and streams from which to derive the small amount of mechanical power needed to operate bellows to .‘stoke the fires’. Along with these critical resources was the need for an enormous amount of energy to produce heat necessary to separate iron by melting the raw ore. That heat was obtained from pharcoal.
