The ScoviUe’s Seaway House * has exposed Douglas fir timbers and framing reclaimed from logging operations on the St. Lawrence River, hence the name of the home.
Their home, the Southern Living House of the Year in 2003, showcases the work of Virginia architects and Rappahannock craftsmen. They have filled it with family pieces from Russ’s family from Utah and Polly’s New Jersey ancestors, as well as souvenirs from their years in the Peace Corps in Africa.
Down on Aaron Mountain Road in Castleton, the Brutons have witnessed many changes in the county since Ginny’s parents moved to Amissville from New Jersey in the 1960s. They have, after almost 40 years, built a home to house all the history and artifacts they have accumulated from New Jersey and from Doug’s family home in North Carolina. In this home, memories lurk around every comer, and down every hall. Old toys, dolls, Dutch furniture from the 18th century, bam lanterns and church chandeliers combine in intriguing and pleasing combinations in every room. Over 140 different homes have been featured over the 50 years of the House Tbur, and many wonderful homes have welcomed visitors.
