It took eight innings and some late-game heroics, but Rappahannock County’s softball team weathered a hardhitting assault at Madison County on Tuesday night to claim a 4-2 victory and wrap up the Panthers’ first regular-season Bull Run District softball crown since 2003.
With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth, Rappahannock senior Rebecca Tupper stepped up to the plate with two outs and teammates Christina Naramore and Katie Burke in scoring position.
The senior cracked a double into center field that brought Naramore and Burke home to break a 2-2 stalemate that had stood since the top of the fifth inning
The Panthers (13-5 overall, 9-1 district) shut out the Mountaineers in the next frame to seal the win.
Madison came dose to mounting a lead in the sixth inning, when they loaded the bases with no outs. The Mountaineers’ had the momentum and Rappahannock looked in danger until pitcher Amanda Smoot took the wind out of Madison’s sails.
