Strasburg 4-1
A 4-1 victory over Strasburg Friday highlighted the Rappahannock string.
“We needed that game badly” Rappahannock County head coach Jeff Jenkins said. “It wasn’t just the bats that hurt (during the losses), we were making mistakes in the field. We’re still not hitting the ball like we’ve been, but we’re tighten up defensively.”
The Panthers, he added, need to keep their errors to one or two a game. And those errors cannot occur when opposing teams have runners on base.
“Our pitching was okay when we were losing,” Jenkins said. “But for some reason, nothing went our way.”
In Friday’s win over Strasburg, Rappahannock supported an outstanding pitching performance from senior righthander Bobby Czekaj by turning three double plays.
Senior Will Miller, making his catching debut this season, did a credible job and killed one Strasburg rally with a nifty defensive play. Strasburg had the bases loaded. The Rams went for a suicide squeeze play. Jenkins called for a curve ball in the dirty.
Miller made a clear block of the ball with Strasburg's base runner bearing down. Miller jumped up, chased the Strasburg runner into a rundown and got the out.
Junior Travis Jenkins also made an excellent defensive play later in the game. Strasburg threatened, putting runners at first and second.
