This will serve as the first in a series of articles focusing on the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office as election day approaches.

With Nov. 6 a short 40 days away, it’s getting closer to the time when Rappahannock citizens will have to choose the county’s next sheriff.
For the first time in more than 30 years, Rappahannock has a sheriff's race without any incumbents. Sheriff Larry Sherertz is retiring after two terms in office and three candidates - Connie Compton Smith, Chris Williams and J.C. Welch — are vying for the position.
The public will have an opportunity to meet Smith, Williams and Welch at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the auditorium at Rappahannock County High School. The Rappahannock News is sponsoring a forum that will give the candidates a chance to introduce themselves, elaborate on their hopes for the sheriff’s office and address questions submitted by Rappahannock citizens.
The three candidates have a lot in common. All of them are lifelong residents of Rappahannock. County. All of them have been or are employed in the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office. And all of them are graduates of Rappahannock County High S&fifiL._ w .
Lt. Connie -Compton Smith, a 1985 graduate of RCHS, started working in the sheriff’s office as a dispatcher in 1988. The 40-year-old Amissville resident has been the office’s lead investigator since 2000.
Maj. Chris Williams graduated from RCHS in 1987 and has worked in the sheriff’s office since 1988. For the past nine years, the 38-year-old Chester Gap resident has served as
