Seven of the office’s employees are road deputies. The commonwealth recommends having one road deputy per 1,500 residents, but pays for every county to have a minimum of six road deputies.
County Administrator John McCarthy said the Board of Supervisors authorized an additional road deputy for the sheriffs office in 2005 to ensure 24-hour coverage for the county. One shift was open when the office had just six road deputies, he said.
