A piano recital devoted entirely to music by a single composer, Frederic Chopin, will take place at the Theatre at Washington, Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 6, beginning at 8 p.m. One composer but, unusually, two pianists: Michael Tsalka, who will play Chopin's 24 Preludes in the first half of the program; and Katarzyna Marzec, who will play three further works in the second half of the concert.
The idea for this concert was formed a year ago, during a discussion between the Theatre's Director, and Tsalka and Marzec following the internationally acclaimed pianists' last concert here, in which they played music for four hands by a variety of composers. Knowing that Marzec was bom and raised in Poland, and holds a graduate degree from the Academy of Music in Krakow, the Theatre’s Director inquired as to her interest in performing music by Poland's great national composer, Frederic Chopin. The inquiry received an enthusiastic response both from Marzec and from the Israeli-born pianist Michael Tsalka. There was a consensus that the music of Chopin is heard too rarely these days. Marzec and Tsalka agreed to prepare an allChopin concert for a year hence, with each playing one half of the program.
Marzec will play Chopin's Ballade No. 1 in G minor; the Fantasie Impromptu, Op. 66 in C sharp minor, and the Andante Spianato; while Tsalka will play all of the Preludes, as stated. Chopin wrote just one work for piano four hands, and the Marzec-Tsalka Piano Duo will open the second half of the program with this short work.
