Washington Mayor Eugene Leggett gave the OK to place the order.
“We didn’t know what the problem was,” Leggett said.
He said he acted on his own authority, notifying the Washington Town Council later, before its next meeting.
“We didn’t have a meeting until September,” he said. “For the meantime we took care of it. It was an emergency.”
Town Clerk Laura Dodd said the town paid $5,776 to repair the broken pump. Country Water Systems charged an additional amount for the repairs because they were unscheduled and occurred on a weekend. Dodd said that the town’s insurance will pay all but $500 of the repair costs.
She said that the Town of Washington has not yet. paid for the new $4,545, eight-footlong pump that Country Water systems ordered. She said the town is under no obligation to purchase the pump, but the current pump is over 15 years old, and town council members have considered replacing it because of its age.
But some council members see little value in making the switch.
