Williams said the incident is part of a scam that has also been reported in Frederick and Warren counties. Whoever is sending the checks usually follows the mailing with a call to request that some of the supposed value of the checks be sent back to them.

A woman on Slate Mills Road called the RCSO at 6:25 p.m. on Sept. 20 to report that her home had been burglarized.
She told the sheriff's office that she was missing several bottles of wine and liquor, some loose change and some jewelry. The missing jewelry was a black-sapphire ring and an antique necklace with a honey-colored stone the size of a 50-cent piece.
