Ira Wayne Cloniger wept and pleaded for Judge Jeffrey Parker to send him to a mental institution.
Public defender Bonnie Hoffman argued, as she did during Cloniger’s trial, that the 44-year-old man was blinded by drunkenness and rage when he stabbed his friend Edward Carlton Fletcher Jr. on July 2, 2006.
Several witnesses testified that Cloniger has undergone a religious conversion and changed his ways since being arrested for the murder 14 months ago.
But when it was all said and done, Parker agreed with what the jury recommended in January: that Cloniger be sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder.
The judge’s decision came after a 2 1/2-hour proceeding in which the defense called four witnesses. Cloniger, who did not testify during his trial, also delivered a monologue that went on for roughly 30 minutes.
