The witnesses attempted to paint a picture of Cloniger as a hard-working, religious person who has suffered from alcoholism and an abusive upbringing.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke did not call any witnesses Friday. He emphasized Cloniger’s long criminal history, which began when he was 16 years old and includes several violent offenses.
“The odds of rehabilitating Mr. Cloniger are slim to none," Luke said. “We have to protect the public and there’s only one way to do that. He needs to be put away where he can’t harm anyone else."
Luke recounted how Cloniger stabbed Fletcher inside a Gid Brown Hollow house and then dragged the 29-year-old to the porch where he urinated on him and talked about burning the body.
“There has not been one sign of remorse,” the commonwealth’s attorney said.
