Only seven members of the public attended the commission’s hearing on the Montpelier proposal. Three people stood up to say they support the use and no one objected to the proposal.
One of the supporters was Joe Svatos, who is one of the Scrutons’ neighbors.
“We appreciate the Scrutons working with us to minimize the effect on adjacent propertieshe said.
Commissioner Tom Tepper represents the Stonewall-Hawthome District, where Montpelier is located.
Tepper commended the Scrutons for rehabilitating the historic property since they bought it in 2004. He also said their proposed use matches with the county’s comprehensive plan and promotes tourism.
“I am thankful that people like you reside in Rappahannock County” he said.
Tepper asked for two conditions on the permit. He requested that a handrail be installed on the steps on the front of the house and that the Scrutons restrict the use of the portico on the east side of the mansion until an engineer examines its structural integrity.
Scruton agreed to those terms, and said the back portico may be refurbished after they host some events and get some revenue coming in.
