The historic Montpelier on F.T. Valley Road is one step from becoming a venue for weddings, receptions, conferences and meetings.
Members of the Rappahannock County Planning Commission unanimously decided on Sept. 19 to recommend that the Board of Supervisors approve the special-exception permit needed for the new use.
Roger and Sophie Scruton, the owners of the 18th-century mansion, say revenue from the event will help them pay for maintenance and restoration of the property. Events at the site will also give more people an opportunity to enjoy the landmark.
The next stop for the Scrutons’ proposal will be the supervisors’ meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday at the Rappahannock County Courthouse.
Roger Scruton was at the commission’s meeting Sept. 19 to answer questions about the proposal.
He said he and his wife are not planning an intensive use for the property. Occasional events, as little as three or four per year, would be enough to help pay for maintenance on the property.
