Cloniger also described what was going through his mind the night of Fletcher’s murder.
“I remember being woke up, punched in the ribs. Helen said, ‘He raped me, he raped me!’ I went inside and it was done. We were freaking out,” he remembered.
As the sheriff’s deputies approached the house, Cloniger told Pierce to tell authorities what had happened. He then ran off into the mountains, eluding police for a week before being arrested on July 9, 2006.
“My baby Helen was raped. I’d failed to protect my family because of alcohol. Now they need me and I can’t provide for them. I’ve let them down and let my father down,” Cloniger sobbed.
Throughout the monologue, he referred to Pierce as his fiancee and Fletcher as his son.
Cloniger also used the opportunity to criticize the way the prosecution handled his trial. He claimed Pierce was coerced into testifying in the prosecution’s favor in exchange for a lighter punishment for an offense she was facing in Clarke County.
