Sgt. J.C. Welch is a 1994 graduate of RCHS. The 31-year-old Sperryville resident worked as a road deputy in Rappahannock for four years before moving to the Culpeper Police Department, where his responsibilities include supervising officers and investigations.
Responsibilities
Sherertz has worked with all three candidates, but has not announced an endorsement for one candidate over another. However, he did have something to say about what a sheriff needs to be successful.
“A person has to possess a variety of different leadership skills to be sheriff,” Sherertz said. Those qualities include credibility, sincerity, experience and the ability to be fair and impartial when dealing with the public.
Good communication skills are also a must. “I think the sheriff has to be a good listener, not just a good talker,” he said.
The office is not a political prize, he said. It belongs to the citizens of Rappahannock County, and the community plays an integral role in helping the RCSO be effective.
“It’s only through this spirit of cooperation that we can continue to enjoy the quality of life that we do " he said.
The sheriff also needs to be skilled at delegating tasks and hiring quality deputies to work for the office.
“There’s a lot of work involved in this that the public doesn’t know about,” Sherertz said. “The sheriff can’t do it all him or herself, and
