on the star
It should be a good crowd. This coming Tuesday, this paper will be sponsoring a sheriff’s forum in the auditorium at Rappahannock County High School. The three candidates for sheriff have all agreed to be there - Connie Smith, Chris Williams and J.C. Welch. Washington resident John Fox Sullivan will be on hand as moderator. He’s been doing his homework, asking folks their opinions and is ready to fire some tough questions. There is a lot at stake in this election. Hired to protect and serve the community of Rappahannock County, the sheriff is also responsible for managing a staff and a budget. Just how big a slice is requested from the county coffers for the sheriff’s office is in his or her hands. The county’s population appears to be dwindling. Has the nature of crime in this county changed as well? Just what is needed to keep the peace? And how much will it cost to do so? Keep in mind that the office of sheriff is in some ways like having a king or queen — their office is powerful and there’s really no one above them. With November 6 coming up in a few short weeks, residents will be heading to the polls to cast their vote for our next sheriff. Whoever you decide gets to wear the star, choose wisely, for that person has a lot to bear.
