Hoffman argued that Cloniger ' acted violently because Pierce said Fletcher had raped her. The public defender also played up the possibility that Cloniger could be rehabilitated.
“People change, sometimes late in life and sometimes through unusual circumstances,” Hoffman said.
“I ask the court to be mindful of what led to the incident that night,” she continued. “This isn’t a case motivated by some petty slight. ... This is a case motivated by a very visceral reaction.”
During his monologue, Cloniger talked about his upbringing under an abusive father, the events of July 2, 2006, and his trial.
