to study all different kinds of tattoos and really give the clients something they’re looking for,” he said.
And he still strives to perfect his work.
“I think that part of being an artist is never being satisfied,” he said.
At the moment, Hayes is the only tattoo artist at the shop, but he plans to bring in a few other artists in the future, and Calandrella will also be learning the trade from him.
Hayes got his start as an apprentice in a tattoo shop in Maui. He lucked out, he said. He was offered the hard-tocome-by apprenticeship by a local tattoo artist that he had befriended.
After two and a half years tattooing friends for free (he estimates that he did between 100 and 150 free tattoos), the artists at the shop reviewed his portfolio and voted to bring him on as a part of the team.
“It’s been a dream come true,” Hayes said.
Art has been his passion for as long as he can remember.
“That’s all I ever wanted to do since I was a little kid, was draw,” he said.
Growing up in Colorado he loaded up on art classes. In high school he took so many that during his senior year he had to enroll in classes at the local community college for fresh subject matter. He later struck out into commercial artwork — despite the pleas of his guidance counselor who advised him to pursue something more practical, he said — and painted a few murals for restaurants.
Tattoos have long intrigued Hayes, whose arms are now covered with them. He got his first one the day after he turned 18, with money he received for his birthday. He hid it from his father for a year before being discovered.
But he said he never thought he would have a shot at being a professional tattoo artist — that is, until he moved to Hawaii when he was 22 and was offered an apprenticeship.
It was also in Hawaii that Hayes and Calandrella met.
Calandrella spent her childhood years in Rappahannock County. She left as a teenager to attend high school near Lake Tahoe and then spent time in Washington, D.C., Wilmington, N.C., and studied cosmetology in Front Royal, Va. In 2004 she packed her bags for Mam, intending to stay only six months. But then she met Hayes.
