WASHINGTON — Bishop Walsh came ready to play. Rappahannock County did not.
The Spartans scored three first half touchdowns, opening up a 21-0 halftime lead, and held off the Panthers fourth quarter rally attempt to send Rappahannock County to its third consecui tive loss, 23-6.
“We played great in the second half and kept them out of the end zone,” RCHS Coach Mike Williams said. “But in football you play two halves and unfortunately we didn’t play very well in the first half”
Bishop Walsh (3-1) took the opening kickoff and marched 73 yards in seven plays. The drive was capped as by a 13-yard touchdown run by quarterback Zac Hare to give the Spartans a 7-0 edge.
The Spartans sustained another long drive to open the second quarter as they went 78 yards on 11 plays. On a 3rd-and-21 from their own 11yard line, Hare tossed a 24 yard pass to Robbie Lehman to keep the drive alive. After several big runs by freshman Dylan UAtri, Hare plowed in from 1-yard out for his second touchdown of the game.
On the Panthers ensuing drive, Johnathan Butler’s pass was intercepted by Lehman and he returned it 39 yards to the Rappahannock nineyard line. One play later, D’Atri scampered around the left end and in for the score, giving Bishop Walsh a 21-0 lead.
The score could have got worse before the intermission, but RCHS freshman safety Connor Settle came up with a huge interception at the Phnthers four-yard line in the final minute of the first half to shut down a Spartans drive.
“Who knows what would have happened if Connor didn’t come up with that interception,” Coach Williams said. “It gave us a little momentum heading to the half If he doesn’t make that play, the rout could be on.”
The Panthers defense came out of the locker room inspired as Steve Dodson intercepted a pass to end the Spartans opening drive.
But the Spartans still found a way to score three plays later as center John Mello snapped the ball over Tim Fitzmorris’ head and out of the end zone for a safety.
Trailing 23-0 heading to the fourth quarter, the Panthers offense finally came to life in the final 10 minutes of the game.
