Mrs. Dean Irvine appeared before the Rappahannock School Board at its September meeting—first in open session and then later in private—to relay her concern over what she viewed as serious inadequacies in one of the seventh grade reading classes.
Mrs. Irvine said she was upset over sending her daughter to the summer reading program and then discovering that the child had received only two days of reading instruction during the first three weeks of school.
According to Mrs. Irvine, her daughter had received no ditto sheets, no homework assignments and no assignments in her reading workbook. In addition, she said, the teacher involved had not even written anything on the blackboard pertaining to reading lessons.
Mrs. Irvine told the School Board that she'd discussed the matter with elementary school Principal Graham Spencer and Superintendent William Bloomer but that the situation hadn't significantly improved.
