Revenue
Horse racing can bring $265 million every year into Virginia’s economy, according to Doug Douglas, executive director of Virginians for Horse Racing. He based his estimate that includes a $40 million payroll in new jobs and $25 million spent in Virginia by horsemen from elsewhere on studies of other states where pari-mutuel horse racing is held.
Douglas noted that in his estimate, he included $25 million in direct taxes on pari-mutuel wagering which will be equally divided between the state and all Virginia localities.
Other revenue, he said, comes from $85 million spent by Virginia horsemen. He noted that in addition to the $265 million year after year, racing is estimated to generate an investment of $300 million in tracks, horses and farms.
Douglas maintained that passage of the horse racing referendum in November will bring new income to state and local government that can “help keep the lid on taxes despite inflation.”
