Federal spending in rural areas has lagged behind in metro areas.
A new U.S. Department of Agriculture report on fiscal spending 1976 federal outlays finds that metro areas, with nearly 73 percent of the U.S. population, received more than 76 percent of the $314.5 billion distributed under 700 federal programs selected for the study by the department’s Economics, Statistics, and Cooperatives Service. These programs amounted to about four-fifths of the total federal outlays for that year.
Federal spending per person in rural areas averaged $1,271, compared with $1,555 in urban areas. Most of the difference was :iue to higher defense and .pace program spending in metro areas. Excluding expenditures for those programs, per person spending was $1,052 in nonmetro areas and $1,087 in metro areas. Per person outlays were nighest in the West and South, but below average in he Northeastern and North Central region. The study reviews federal .pending for human resource ievelopment, housing, .ommunity and industrial ievelopment, agriculture and latural resources, defense ind space and justice and aw enforcement programs.
