Park Visits

Shenandoah National Park had 291,300 visitors during August, 1978, according to data released by Superintendent Robert Jacobsen. Compared to August, 1977, when 425,000 travelers went through the Park, this shows a decrease of 31.4 percent. For Calendar Year 1978 compared with Calendar Year 1977, the decrease is 40.9 percent.

Part of the reported decrease may be attributed to changes in the procedure for counting travel. As of January 1, 1978, a new multiplier (2.8 rather than 3.5) is being used for converting vehicles to visitors and travel on only three secondary roads is being counted.

Overnight stays for August numbered 85,905 compared to 113,167 for the same month in 1977. For 1978 to date, overnight stays total 370,687 compared to 443,737 in 1977.

The high temperature for August as measured at the Big Meadows Weather Station was 81 degrees. The minimum was 47 degrees. Precipitation for the month amounted to 3.41 inches.
