When asked by Chairman Beverly Massie to comment, Bloomer indicated that he’d rather have Spencer explain the situation to the Board. Spencer, however, had not yet arrived at the meeting.
Bloomer acknowledged that he'd discussed the reading program with Mrs. Irvine and had told her if things weren't resolved “to her satisfaction" in a week, that "further action" would be taken.
Noting other parents had expressed concern over this particular seventh grade reading class to Spencer, Mrs. Irvine said she didn’t want further delay in remedying the problem.
"Reading has been very much a concern of this Board," said Mrs. Massie. She suggested that the discussion continue in executive session when Spencer arrived. Later, the Board went into a closed meeting for approximately two and a half hours with part of the time spent with Mrs. Irvine and Spencer.
