Being selected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America was certainly not one of Janet Deroo’s life goals. In fact, up until her selection for inclusion in the 1978 awards program, the sixth grade teacher at Rappahannock Elementary School didn’t even know that there was such a program designed to "honor and encourage exceptional young women between the ages of 21 and 36 who have distinguished themselves in their homes, in their professions and in their communities.”
A “voice out of the past” is responsible for her being in the 1978 edition of “Outstanding Young Women of America,” according to Janet. She said that a friend from scouting days who she hadn’t seen for seven years had nominated her for the honor.
As a teenager and as an adult, Janet Deroo has a distinguished record of community involvement and service. While attending public school in Moorestown, New Jersey, where she grew up, Janet won varsity basketball letters. She traveled to France with her high school French club, coming home with a wish to return to Europe some day to live and teach.
Janet did volunteer work as a Candy Striper for four years at the local Moorestown hospital. She was also an active member of her church, teaching Sunday School and belonging to the young group and choir.
Miss Deroo has been involved with Girl Scouting for 16 years as a member and seven years as a leader of Brownie, Junior and Cadette groups. As a Scout, Janet received the "God and Community" award through her church and Girl Scout troop. She earned First Class Scout as a Cadette and was chosen as Senior Representative for Burlington County Girl Scouts to attend the 1972 International Girl Scout Convention in Dallas, Texas.
Janet also worked at the Burlington County Scouts camp for two years as business manager and earned her American Camping Association Advanced Campcrafter award through Girl Scouts.
In addition to her interests in camping and working with children, Janet likes both sewing and knitting. During high school, she parlayed her hobby into a third place state award in New Jersey’s annual “Make-it-with-Wool" contest.
