Advocates are volunteers ‘ who are trained, guided and I regularly evaluated by , professionals but who are involved in a one-to-one relationship unlike any other. In their own style they help their proteges learn to behave in socially acceptable ways and blend in to social settings. The protege is also evaluated regularly and suggestions regarding what areas need to be worked with are made, but the style and personality of the advocate determine the techniques to be used.
Additionally, the advocate acts as a behavior model of his or her protege in situations like eating at a fast-food restaurant, shopping for groceries or hunting for bargains at the discount store.
