Revenues Up
Revenues collected by, the Division of Motor Vehicles during fiscal year 1977-78 were $450 million, up by $28.6 million or 6.8 percent over the previous year, while operating expenses at $30.5 million increased by $1.4 million or 4.8 percent, according to DMV Commissioner Vern L. Hill.
Hill said the increased revenue reflected higher consumption of motor fuels and increases in sales tax collections. Revenue from Virginia’s participation in the International Registration Plan, whereby trucks pay fees to Virginia based on the number of miles traveled in the state, contributed $11.5 million, a 70 percent increase.
Motor fuels tax revenues were up $10.6 million to $266,294,045 a four per cent increase over the one-year period.
At the end of June there were 3.5 million motor vehicles registered in the state and 3.3 million drivers holding valid Virginia licenses. Hill said.
DMV revenues are the second largest source of state income. They are deposited in the state Highway Maintenance and Construction Fund.
