Bill Adams, District Conservationist for the Soil Conservation Service, warns of another period of soil erosion coming up. "Bare soil is subject to erosion." says Adams, ‘‘and with the harvest, a lot of acres in Rappahannock County will be bare."
Fortunately. Adams says, there are several ways to prevent excessive winter season erosion. “Dead cover is just as good as growing plants for protecting the soil. Corn stalks cut down so they touch and cover the soil are very effective."
He continued, ‘‘Double cropping systems that keep a growing crop on the field most of the time are also good." As a final suggestion, he said. “The traditional use of a cover crop for its own sake is a good practice which is being used more."
