$2,000 for unemployment compensation (3) $1,005 for the Rappahannock-Rapidan Emergency Services Council and (4) $1,585 in the sheriffs budget to cover substitution of three correctional officers for the four dispatchers previously sought. In addition, Cox noted a decrease on the revenue side of the ledger of $29,000 for the sheriff s office expenses and an increase in state reimbursement of $14,500 for operation of that department’s county owned cars.
Cuts Expected
Cox indicated that further changes in the budget total will come once the State Compensation Board acts on salary and personnel requests. Constitutional officers (commissioner of revenue, treasurer, sheriff and commonwealth’s attorney) are slated to get ten percent increases in the preliminary budget. But since state employees are expected to get pay hikes ‘of 4.5 percent in 1982-83, the Compensation Board will probably hold raises to that same level, according to Cox. The Compensation Board pays 50 percent of salary for the commissioner of revenue and treasurer and all salary for the commonwealth’s attorney, sheriff, deputies, correctional officers, police dispatchers and sheriff’s office secretary.
Sheriff Buntin has asked the compensation Board to authorize two additional deputies and a full-time secretary. He told the supervisors on Monday that he feels “pretty certain" the three new positions will be approved.
Regarding the correctional officers (who will also handle a new county-wide dispatch system), Buntin said he’s asked that one be authorized as of July 1 with the remaining two to be hired
