But the reason why was that everyone filled their ice houses and they would cut ice off the river and put it in ice houses and in the summer they'd put the ice in the water and everyone drank from a common dipper. The privies were right along the hanks of the river and naturally the waste went into the river.
"Many, many people died. 1 knew one family with three children who all died at the same time with diptheria. Doctors then encouraged women to have big families. They knew- that a lot of the children would die anyway. So whenever old Dr. Smith - a wonderful old doctor - went to visit a family that had lost a child, he'd say: now the best thing to do is have another one right away. You expect some of them to die.
"One nice thing about pioneer life was that no one lived alone. If anyone had trouble, there was someone to help them all the time. If anybody was sick, regardless of w hat they had - they would sit up all night with them. 1 don't know why but they would - so if something happened they'd be ready to go for a doctor or give first aid."
