If the jail is reopened, he said, it might be possible to eliminate the $6,000 appropriation for contractual care of prisoners. (For the past five years, Rappahannock prisoners have been housed in Fauquier County’s facility at a per day cost of $8 an inmate. But in March, Fauquier sheriff Luther Cox announced that over-crowding forced discontinuance of that arrangement. With the closest empty jail beds at least 50 miles away, the supervisors have tentatively decided to proceed with renovation of the local 24hour lock-up so it can once again be used as a jail. An appropriation of $10,000 for design work has been included in the 1982-83 budget.)
