Judd and Son
"At Rock Mills they had a big mill run by a man name of Judd and his son. They must have had a regular downpour or cloudburst like we had at Sperryville a couple of years ago because all of a sudden the water began to rise and it started dow n the stream towards the mill and began getting higher and higher all the time and the man said: ‘Son. this mill is going to wash away if we don't do something about it. And there’s not a thing in the world we can do about it." He said. "You'll just have to pray, son." '
"The boy said: ‘Well I’ve never prayed.’
"The man said: 'Well, I’ve never prayed either but you get down on your knees and I’ll get down on my knees and we'll clasp our hands and close our eyes and when I finish you say, ’Amen', which .means, ’1 stand by what you say!'
"So the old man knelt down and closed his eyes and said: ‘O. God. I see the water rising and gitting higher and higher and I can't do nothing about it. Now, I ain't never axed you for nothing before and I won't ax you for no favors again if you just won't let my mill wash away.'
"Well, the mill w a s h ed away, and if you ever go over there you can see the mill wheel still in the bank. It must have happened to lots of them because there are very few. mills standing today."
